Care Guide for Wool and Linen Throws and Picnic Blankets

A good-quality throw or picnic blanket can last for decades with the right care. The most important rule applies to everything we sell: dry clean only.

Cleaning

Please dry clean all our throws and picnic blankets, whether wool, merino, linen or recycled blend. Don't machine wash, hand wash or tumble dry them, as water and heat can shrink and felt the fibres. If you spill something, blot it straight away with a clean cloth rather than rubbing, then take the blanket to a dry cleaner if a mark remains.

Keeping your blanket fresh

Wool naturally resists odours, so it rarely needs cleaning. The simplest way to freshen it is to hang it outside on a dry, breezy day, out of direct sunlight. Give it a good shake first to remove dust and crumbs.

Bobbling

A little bobbling (small balls of fibre on the surface) is normal in the first few weeks of use. It settles down over time. You can remove bobbles gently with a fabric comb or de-bobbler.

Protecting against moths

Moths are attracted to natural fibres, particularly in dark, undisturbed places. Store blankets clean, check storage areas regularly, and use natural deterrents such as cedar blocks or lavender sachets.

Storing your blanket

Make sure your blanket is clean and completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a breathable cotton or linen bag rather than plastic, in a cool, dark, dry place. Rolling rather than folding avoids permanent creases. For more detail, read our guide to storing wool blankets.

Picnic blankets

After a picnic, shake off grass and crumbs, and let the blanket dry completely before rolling it up, especially the waterproof backing. Store it rolled with its straps.

Linen throws

Linen softens beautifully with use and naturally has a relaxed, slightly creased look. Like our wool throws, our linen throws should be dry cleaned only.
